

The decision was made to tie in with the 16th anniversary of season 1, episode 1 "The Pilot", which first aired on NBC on March 24, 2005. On Thursday, NBCUniversal announced that every single episode of The Office, from season 1 to season 9, will be available to stream for free on Peacock for one week only.

Despite this, NBCU chief Jeff Shell claims The Office is getting streamed more on Peacock than it was on Netflix. The Office seasons 3-9 are only available on Peacock Premium, which angered some fans who didn't want to pay an extra subscription fee. NBC's fledgling streaming service has a free subscription option, but only season 1 and season 2 are available on that version. It was consistently one of the most streamed shows on the streaming giant every week, until it left at the end of 2020, moving over to Peacock. It's remained hugely popular despite ending in 2013 after season 9, mainly thanks to its popularity on Netflix. Season 1 didn't gain much traction, but after star Steve Carell became a household name thanks to the success of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, his character Michael Scott was retooled and The Office season 2 changed direction, steadily growing in popularity to become a massive hit. One of the most popular TV shows ever, The Office had an inauspicious start on NBC, launching to little fanfare in March 2005. To celebrate The Office’s16th anniversary, Peacock is making all nine seasons of the series free to stream for one week starting Thursday.
